Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?

A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.

Title: Evergreen shrubs native to North Georgia
Answered by: Nan Hampton

QUESTION:

I am looking for native plants (shrubs) that will stay green during the winter in North Georgia. We are completing a xeriscape landscape plan as a demonstration site and have many native plants donated but most are dormant during winter months. Do you have any suggestions?

ANSWER:

The following are evergreen shrubs native to Georgia, some of which can be considered small trees:

Ilex vomitoria (yaupon)

Illicium floridanum (Florida anisetree)

Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel)

Leiophyllum buxifolium (sandmyrtle)

Leucothoe axillaris (coastal doghobble)

Leucothoe fontanesiana (highland doghobble)

Morella cerifera (wax myrtle)

Here also are some woody groundcovers that are evergreen:

Epigaea repens (trailing arbutus)

Gaultheria procumbens (eastern teaberry)
