Native Plants
Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Acacia tree that will grow in Louisiana
Answered by: Nan Hampton
QUESTION:
Please tell me if there are any Acacia Trees that will grow in direct sun in Louisiana. I really want to plant some from seeds but don't which to get for zone 8. Thank you Mr Smarty PlantsANSWER:
Acacia farnesiana (Huisache) should grow quite happily in New Orleans, Louisiana, and in the sun. Here is the USDA Plants Database distribution map for Louisiana. Acacia angustissima (Prairie acacia) also occurs in Louisiana and grows in both part shade and sun. The distribution map for Louisiana, however, doesn't show it occurring in the New Orleans area. It might work, too, but you probably would be wise to stick to the huisache acacia.
