Native Plants
Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Leucophyllum Resistant to Verticillium Wilt
Answered by: Anne Van Nest
QUESTION:
I need to know which large shrubs are resistant to verticillium wilt? I believe that a few of our Elaeagnus have succumbed to this disease, but being over 15 years old, I am not positive. I am thinking of replacing them with Silverado sage or something similar.ANSWER:
Verticillium wilt has a huge list of susceptible plants from herbaceous to trees, and members of the Elaeagnus genus are susceptible to this vascular disease. Leucophyllum frutescens (Texas sage) is not listed as susceptible so it is a good replacement plant.
