Abstract
Addresses factors that affect floral abortion in Yucca filamentosa including floral position and herbivory by a beetle. Flowers were more likely to be retained if they flowered late within an inflorescence, had a more distal position, and if there were a large number of flowers on a side branch. The timing of pollination did not affect fruit set, indicating the plant's ability to allocate resource depending on fluctuating pollinator availability. Beetles had a large effect on floral abscission, accounting for 37% of floral abortion.Suggested Citation
