There are two jack-in-the-pulpits, both 1-3 feet tall and very similar, except that this one has 5 leaflets forming the leaf and the other, A. triphyllum, has 3. Flowers grow on a long, thick spike that is enclosed by a fleshy bract (in this case an enlarged leaf) with a flap over the top. It has the general likeness of an old-fashioned pulpit with a canopy over it, which suggests its common name. The many tiny flowers are off-white in color. It has pistillate flowers at the base and staminate flowers in the middle portion.
