A rare, but not federally-protected species. Listed as an S1 species in Nebraska, Tennessee and Georgia, an S3 species in Missouri and an S5 species in Kansas.

Distribution
USA: GA , KS , MO , NE , TNNative Distribution: Central-Midwestern US in north central Kansas and adjacent south central Nebraska and a disjunct area in east central Missouri. Two, small disjunct populations occur in the Southeastern US, one near Chattanooga, Tennessee and one near Rome, Georgia.
Native Habitat: Midwestern US populations are found on dolomitic glades and limestone prairies. In Georgia, the species occurs in Pinus echinata-Quercus marilandica-Quercus stellata woodlands.
